Meanwhile, Margaret Atwood, author of The Handmaid’s Tale, wrote in her 2002 book Negotiating with the Dead: A Writer on Writing that the Dark Tower is a stand-in for whatever a person’s fear may be. Author Judith Weissman argued that the Dark Tower symbolized a soldier’s devotion to honor and glory by Roland going nuts, Weissman said Browning’s poem served to demystify military heroism. Michael Whelan's original art for 'The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower' Michael Whelanīesides being an actual, literal dark tower that supposedly keeps the multiverse from collapsing in King’s books, the Dark Tower in the poem functions as a metaphor for pretty much whatever the audience can come up with. So I started off wondering: What is this tower? What does it mean? And I decided that everybody keeps a Dark Tower in their heart that they want to find.” Nobody knows who wrote it, and nobody knows what the Dark Tower is. “Browning never says what that tower is,” says King, “but it’s based on an even older tradition about Childe Roland that’s lost in antiquity. In a 1989 interview with Castle Rock News, King revealed that he was fascinated with the Dark Tower’s mysteries. At the end, Roland reaches the Dark Tower, and Roland blows on a slughorn, a declaration to challenge whoever - or whatever - lives inside the Dark Tower. From there, Roland endures many challenges on his way to the tower, some of them just in his head. An epic story at 34 six line stanzas in iambic pentameter, the poem tells the story of Roland - perhaps named after the heroic paladin of the medieval French poem The Song of Roland - who doubts whether or not the person who gave him directions to the Dark Tower was honest. Published in 1855, “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came” was included as part of a collection of poems titled Men and Women, which received “little notice” upon its release. But none of it would have started if not for a 19th-century English poem by Robert Browning, in which the eponymous, and indeed ominous “Dark Tower” has come to serve as a metaphor for many things. Mashing horror with Arthurian fantasies and spaghetti westerns, The Dark Tower books have stretched into novel installments, several tie-in books, a prequel comic series from Marvel, an online game, and a film from director Nikolaj Arcel ( A Royal Affair). In 1982, American author Stephen King released The Gunslinger, the first volume of King’s self-ascribed magnum opus series The Dark Tower. ![]() My dad is into this stuff and likened turning away from TS because of all the DLC to going into a store, seeing that it would cost you a few thousand dollars to buy all the games for the PS3, and saying 'oh man, fuck that, video games aren't for me'. It reignited a childhood spark for a brief amount of time, as well as brought into context that while the life on the rails is simple in movement it is not simply pushing the throttle forward and waiting. Meanwhile people who are actually into trains tend to view it was an awesome and affordable way to get cool shit that isn't really possible in the standard old fashioned trainset hobby universe. Train Simulator 2015 was an interesting experience. I always find it funny that gamers (not in this thread, just in general) tend to go out of their way to point out that everything Train Simulator has to offer is like, $2,500, and paint it as some exploitative DLC model or something. The developers cater to a really, really, wide range of train enthusiasts. u/Free_VNasty wrote it better than I could, so I'll copy his response here. All told, it is quite like Sims 4 in that you would need to buy a sizeable chunk of content to make it worth getting in the first place, and that's just a bit more than annoying. Contents 1 Features 1.1 Routes 2 Reception 2.1 Sales 2. 1 It sold one million units worldwide by 2005. It's a half decent attempt, but it's lack of content out of the box makes it as contemptible as the ultimate insult of Sims 4. Microsoft Train Simulator is a 2001 train simulator developed for Microsoft Windows, it was released on May 31, 2001, and developed by the UK-based company Kuju Entertainment. It got a hefty slating on Steam for not being as good as the predecessors and despite having the delightful Sean Bean of Sharpe's fame (don't tell me he's always going to be more popular for GoT it just won't fly with me) doing the narrating for the intro video, it doesn't really do anything significant to improve the experience. Whether you love driving trains, creating new routes or just watching the landscape fly by, your journey starts with TS2014. It's very limited in content, you just get a bare bones set-up, couple of trains, couple of tracks, a heap of scenarios for each of the tracks, which doesn't really add to the variety for me. Train Simulator 2014 delivers everything you love about trains with the exhilaration of speed, stunning graphics, a variety of trains, real-world routes and challenging assignments. Yes, you can turn this off, but no, it's not immediately obvious when you HAVE turned it off. At regular intervals, having to press a certain combination of keys to tell the computer you are still there, still know what's going on and still paying attention to the signals, the speed and the conditions the train is being controlled in is nothing short of immensely annoying. NZTS Workshops have brought the Midland Line to life in Train Simulator, recreating the challenging 90km section between Aickens and Springfield, including the 8. Instead of the non-white characters being singled out for description, the Consultant identifies white characters. The town was instead named Freedom, as Abraham Goode had suggested. The protagonist continues his research into the town’s history, and he learns that one of the original founders, William Field, had proposed the name Struggle for the town’s original name. Unseen, the wound eventually became infected, and the toe had to be removed. He covered his wounded toe with a brand of bandage, Apex, that he had helped name. However, around the time that he badly injured one of his toes, he began to become disillusioned about the work, viewing it as shallow. He had no interest in being a nomenclature consultant, but he had an innate talent for it and therefore developed a passion for the work. The narrative occasionally digresses to give exposition on the protagonist’s backstory. With the help of Beverley, the local librarian, the protagonist manages to find documents that tell the true history of the town. Regina sees the necessity of economic growth, but she wishes to change the town’s name back to Freedom, as she dislikes the way in which economic changes often obfuscate elements of history. The protagonist meets with Mayor Regina Goode, who is African-American and is a descendant of Abraham Goode, one of the town’s original founders. However, the industrialist Winthrop family eventually arrived and used their economic influence to essentially take over the town, rename it, and rewrite its history. The protagonist learns that the town was originally founded by African-Americans and was originally named Freedom. Albie Winthrop wishes for the town’s name to stay the same, as he views the town’s history as inextricable from his family’s history. Lucky wishes to rename the town New Prospera, as he sees that name as being more representative of his own vision of the town’s future. The town council is comprised of Mayor Regina Goode, Aberdeen Software CEO Lucky Aberdeen, and Albert ‘Albie’ Winthrop, who is a descendant of the Winthrops after whom the town is named.Īs the protagonist begins to meet with the town council members and research the town’s history, he learns various facts that are relevant to the town’s potential name change. Winthrop is an old suburban town that has begun to undergo rapid economic growth due to the arrival of a large tech company, Aberdeen Software. However, he is then hired by a town called Winthrop to help them think of a new name for the town. He used to work for a large firm, but he recently quit his job after beginning to become disillusioned with the work. The novel’s protagonist-whose name is never given-is a professional nomenclature consultant, meaning he is paid to think of good names for products.
